Twitter is primarily designed to work with the SMS protocol. SMS allows the user to exchange messages from a cellphone to other services like landline phone or an internet website. Any message sent to Twitter is collected by its mobile switching centre (MSC) and processed by a series of redirections before getting posted on the website.
The website sends the message back to all the people in the user’s network by reversing the process. To target a larger user base, Twitter operates on the SMS protocol as it is the most widely used and supported by all service providers across the globe.
